Our first Girls in Capes book club title of the year is The Young Elites by Marie Lu!
Adelina is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.
I’m a huge fan of Marie Lu’s work — I’ve been reading her books since her debut novel Legend came out. While I loved that trilogy as a whole, I was disappointed in the conclusion of the third book, Champion, since it didn’t deliver the devastating ending I was hoping to read. (You could say I’m not exactly the nicest of people when it comes to being awful to fictional characters…)
That said, I’m looking forward to discussing The Young Elites in book club. Young Elites is darker than Legend, its protagonist really just not a nice person. And once I’m done re-reading The Young Elites, I’ll finally get around to its sequel, The Rose Society.
